WASDE; GIPSA Rule Controversy to Enter 10th Year; NAFTA Proteins

WASDE and Hog Slaughter USDA’s December WASDE report was released this week, and it showed a drop of 180 million pounds in pork production compared with the November issue. This decline occurred despite an increase in carcass weights, evidenced by last week’s average slaughter weight  of 286 pounds, up 3 pounds from the previous year. The reduction in pork was therefore the result of smaller-than-anticipated hog slaughter so far in this quarter. As of 1 September, there were 67.42 million head of market hogs, 103 percent of the same quarter last year. The slowdown in slaughter pace is probably a contributor to the higher slaughter weights. WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company.
