Agriculture Is Gambling

With tax returns due last week, an agricultural retailing source noted that the IRS receives the same percent of total returns (1.4 percent) listing farm income as those listing gambling income or losses. The two professions are often compared and, ignoring a possible overlap in the two statistics, this should mean that at least 2.8 percent of Americans are optimistic about winning. However, a new DTN/Progressive Farmer Agriculture Confidence Index indicates that farmers (and particularly livestock producers) are pessimistic right now. The good news is that their future expectations indicate a shift toward more optimism.
