Game of Chicken U.S. officials were celebrating China’s announcement that after half a dozen years of bogus excuses for keeping out American poultry, Beijing opened its market. The announcement came a week after the U.S. announced the opening of its market to cooked Chinese poultry meat. It is actually a deal that reinforces China’s objective of being a value-added market. In the near-term, China’s poultry meat imports are up nearly 48 percent on ASF problems but ultimately the nation sees itself as a poultry meat processor, producing birds and importing carcasses that all employ Chinese workers to dissemble, prepare and then consume what is needed domestically while exporting the rest to high labor cost countries. Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
