Livestock Roundup: ASF and Turkey; Hog Expansion Not Slowing

ASF and Turkey Turkey prices have been in a relative tailspin for two years. Wholesale hen prices started dropping in mid-2017 from about $1/pound and reached below $0.80/pound by December 2018. Prices have firmed in the past few months, largely due to exports, and a good portion of those sales has been the result of Mexico’s hedging against the African swine fever (ASF) impact on pork prices. Turkey can be used as a substitute for pork in processed products. Total U.S. turkey exports in April were 108 percent of April 2018, which marked the first year-over-year growth since October 2018. In May, exports were 121.5 percent of May 2018. Mexico bought 16,000 MT that month, a year-over-year increase of 117 percent. However, other cou...

Illuminating the value of technical research

On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
