Odd Ethanol Economics

The Golden state is being challenged over the saying, as goes California, so goes the Nation. Egg farmers in other states are challenging Sacramento’s dictate on how they farm, and the Trump Administration is challenging the state on at least two fronts: the imposition of its own stiffer automobile emission standard, and the state’s international cap and trade carbon agreement with Quebec. Next on the list for being overturned should be its Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).  At a time when the federal government is trying to keep the domestic ethanol industry afloat by expanding consumption, California has adopted an LCFS that favors imported Brazilian ethanol made from sugarcane over local starch-based ethanol. Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
