Summer Supply Destruction The nomination of Andrew Wheeler to become the EPA administrator is being held hostage by a bipartisan and powerful group of senators unless the agency quickly approves summertime use of E15 ethanol blended fuel. The EPA initially blamed the government shutdown for slowing publication of the proposed rule, which it has now combined with language intended to curb biofuel credit speculation. USDA’s leadership is suggesting “discretionary enforcement,” meaning the use of E15 would not be punished if the EPA is delayed in finalizing the rule. This means that reducing the supply overhang in the corn market can now be anticipated. Presumably, this same group of farm state legislators will eventually en...

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
