2014 will surely go down as one of the most memorable years in U.S. crop production history. Planted corn acreage in 2014 fell almost 5 percent below the preceding year. Yet, estimated U.S. corn production rose to a record of more than 14.4 billion bushels.A year ago as the New Year of 2014 loomed, grain and soy markets were beginning the transition from a multiyear period of demand-driven dynamics to one of building U.S. and world supplies. This is not to say that demand went away or lost the capacity to affect markets or that the transition was smooth and easy. In 2013, the U.S. produced substantially larger corn and soybean crops than in 2012 when production was cut by a severe summer drought. World production of corn and soybeans for th...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.

Key Takeaways: Expected growth in U.S. soybean crushing capacity and output, driven by biofuel demand, will increase domestic soymeal supplies, with production growth significantly outpacing demand. WPI forecasts soymeal production increasing from 65.8 million short tons in 2026/27 to 70.5 mil...
