Biotech for Environment; Transatlantic Negotiating Mandate; Indonesian Heat

Biotech for Environment Greens and others in the European Parliament reportedly reacted badly to rapporteur Jessica Polfjärd's initiative that would broaden the EU Commission’s proposal for lessening regulation of new genomic techniques. Yet it is genetic modification technologies that are going to enable the EU to meets its goal of curbing nitrogen losses in agriculture. Polfjärd’s proposal would expand the use of NGT to organic production, which proponents of organic food argue violates the very premise of this production technique. However, organic production leaches nitrogen just like conventional production and the manure delivers fewer nutrients. A lot more plants could fix nitrogen and solve the leaching proble...

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
