Demand Destruction

The anguish among U.S. agricultural producers over the U.S. trade disputes with China and, particularly, the latter’s retaliatory tariffs on their soybeans, grains, pork and other products is understandably strong. Soybean farmers planted a record amount of acreage last spring in anticipation of large and growing demand from China, but their outlook changed in July with implementation of its 25 percent tariff on that commodity. U.S. soybean prices, both futures and cash basis, collapsed so sharply that this crop suddenly became unprofitable for many. As time passed without any sign of progress in settling the dispute or even any serious negotiating efforts, fear has grown that the soybean tariff, effectively an embargo on imports of...

From WPI Consulting

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
