Hunger at Home, Food Abroad

Bloomberg reports a dramatic increase in hunger in India last year due to the economic losses from COVID. The Centre for Sustainable Employment in India believes that 2021 will be worse because now savings have been depleted. Meanwhile, India’s agricultural exports have increased by over 17 percent in fiscal 2021. The U.S. is the largest imported of food from India. Despite ranking amongst the worst nations in the world for hunger, India has been a net exporter of food since 1991. Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan credits the growth in India’s agricultural exports, despite pandemic disruptions, to policy interventions by the government and the expansion of products into new markets. Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
