Later today USDA is expected to announce that corn planting was about 20 percent completed as of last Sunday, 15 April. If so, that would be a record-early pace. It would suggest that corn planting will be more than 50 percent complete on 1 May, which would also be a record. If this proves to be the case, analysts will become euphoric about the potential for a record-high national average corn yield of say, 165 BPA or even higher. After all, early planted corn crops tend to result in above-average yields. If a record-big corn yield were combined with a historically large planted area, the result would be a humongous 2012 U.S. corn production that would quickly swamp any old crop shortages. Moreover, early planting likely will result in an...
Illuminating the value of technical research
On behalf of a commodity producer organization, WPI evaluated the outputs from a project that featured a $5 million investment into technical research over multiple years. WPI’s team captured the results of this extensive effort and synthesized them for presentation to the organization’s governing board; among the findings uncovered and presented for the first time was the development of genomic traits proven, via rigorous testing, to provide crop yield advantages of 50 percent or more to U.S. farmers in times of drought. Capturing measurable results from long-term efforts can be challenging. Educating clients on the dynamics of success measurement when quantifiable results are not readily available requires deep client-consultant collaboration and an ability to consider both near- and long-term client aspirations with market/policy dynamics – attributes that WPI brings to every consulting engagement.
