More Things to Keep You Up at Night

USDA will release the May WASDE on Thursday, which will include its first glimpse at the 2017/18 U.S. supply and demand estimates. It will presumably use trend-line or near trend-line yields for corn, spring wheat and soybean crops because it is so early, but it is unlikely to factor in any weather conditions or later-than-desired corn and spring wheat planting into the production estimates. This means ending supply estimates for MY 2018/19 will also probably be larger than the actuals unless crop production weather improves. There was chatter last week and again today about cargoes of Russian wheat headed to Mexico and French wheat on its way to the U.S. We don’t doubt these rumors. On behalf of a Canadian oilseed processer WPI's team provided market analysis, econometric modeling and financial due diligence in support of a $24 million-dollar investment in a Ukrainian crush plant. Consistent with WPI's findings, local production to supply the plant and the facility's output have expanded exponentially since the investment.
