Transatlantic Expectations EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström is in Washington to meet with her U.S. counterpart, Robert Lighthizer, and discuss efforts to better harmonize regulations. She expressed the view that President Trump would not impose tariffs on European automobiles due to a July agreement to pursue trade talks. However, Mr. Trump is very impatient, and while Brussels wants an agreement limited to industrial goods, the U.S. president’s recent attack on higher European duties on wine illustrates his broader view of the transatlantic trade problem.
