Wheat Concerns in Asia

Asia has been adopting wheat as a food staple over many decades but the war In Ukraine has some worried about its supply reliability. Over the past dozen years, rice consumption has averaged a 0.86 percent annual increase while wheat consumption has been growing at twice that rate. Because climactic conditions in much of Asia are too hot and humid for wheat, imports of the commodity have grown by 54 percent over the same period. India has been expanding wheat production but then imposed an export embargo last May when its own domestic supply became worrisome. By diversifying the types of staples consumed, food security is enhanced since a production failure in one crop is offset by other available crops. However, Russia and Ukraine provide...

Forecasting developments in production agriculture

On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
